Merlot Turno

Younger vines’ vivacity and energy provide for lush, abundant growth. Rightly so, as we need to choose vines that have a passion for life and for growth.

In their early years, usually during the first twenty years or so, vines expend most of the energy on growth. In terms of quality of the fruit it matters little whether a vine yields a pound, two or even ten pounds of grape per year; ten pounds of this grape is of no lesser quality than one. Nevertheless, if our aim is to once have a real vineyard, then we have to forego quantity in the vine’s first couple of decades and deliberately produce fewer grapes. This prevents the vine from exhausting itself and allows it to become wiser as it matures with time, developing its own style and developing a sensitivity for its vintner, remaining full of vigor, health and well-rested. That is when patience pays its dividend and when we can start considering real wine.

Vila Marija is a brand of wines produced from grape grown on young vines. Growth in young vines is still very strong and the grape clusters are closer together. These wines exploit the youthful vivacity of the vine and reflect its sparkle, freshness and playfulness. They are most suitable for those times when we desire a drink but have no time to think about the wine and give it our full attention, as required by great wines. Vila Marija wines are best in carefree moments or at times when other worries offer no time to think about wine.

Vila Marija wines are nonetheless not your everyday, classical fresh wines. They mature for at least eight months. During the maturing process the wines are left on the lees, stimulating not only regular alcoholic fermentation but also biological deacidification, a process whereby sharp acids (usually malic acids) are transformed into softer, smoother lactic acids. This leads to a certain loss of aroma, particularly the simpler aromas, but is offset by developing greater body and in part more complex aromas.

Vila Marija Merlot shows deep ruby colour with garnet tinges. Quite intense on the nose with dark red fruits and black fruits dominating over toasted mocha notes. Clearly showing a warm 2012 vintage. Dry on the palate medium bodied, a bit savage and untamed with good structure and intensity which will allow for another 5-6 years of cellaring. With a long finish.

Vila Marija Merlot pairs outstandingly with a good cheese.

Gredič

Furlanski Tokaj / Tocai Friulano is a very deceptive name. In Alsace this is a Pinot Gris, in Hungary a method of production; famed Hungarian Tokaji wines are in fact produced from Furmint or Šipon. The name Tokaj was in fact subject to an international dispute between Hungary and other “users” of the name. The Hungarians won the dispute and since Tokaji is a Hungarian province Germany, France, Italy and also Slovenia had to relinquish their variations of the name (Jakot).

Exto (EX TOKAI) is one of our first releases of the current on the market, showing youth and energy compared to wisdom and age of some other whites. The colour is beautiful golden and of medium depth, showing some viscosity. It is quite pronounced, very much in shape of this medium aromatic variety. It is reminiscent of tomato leaves, gooseberries, green pepper, dried herbs… Not unlike its bigger brother – Sauvignon Blanc. Very dry, energetic in the mouth with plenty of aromatic character and youth. Best to drink now or in next 2-3 years, bur will be pleasant event after

Its gentle acids make this wine for an excellent aperitif. It is best served at 10-12 degrees Celsius. It also pairs well with egg dishes and risottos.
