As Canada mourns Queen Elizabeth, Canada’s head of state, the country braces for the many changes that come with her passing.
Canada is a part of the British Commonwealth and as such, we have an allegiance to the Crown and to King Charles III. The king’s accession to the throne was proclaimed in Canada during a ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa on Sept. 10.
The proclamation was issued on the authority of an order in council to announce the demise of the Crown and the accession to the throne of the new Sovereign.
“Whereas our late Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth the Second, passed away on September 8, 2022, by whose death the Crown of Canada vests in His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George;
We, the Right Honourable Mary May Simon, Governor General of Canada, assisted by His Majesty’s Privy Council for Canada, proclaim that His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George is now, by the death of our late Sovereign, Charles the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom, Canada and His other Realms and Territories King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to whom we acknowledge faith and allegiance.
Given at Ottawa, this tenth day of September, two thousand and twenty-two.

The Crown and its symbols are woven into the fabric of Canadian’s daily lives: The Queen’s likeness appears on the currency and stamps; the Royal Arms of Canada appear on buildings and official seals; museums and institutions bear the title of Crown corporations; passports issued in Canada invoke The Queen’s authority on their inside cover; and the names of the ships of the Royal Canadian Navy, which represent Canada around the world, are each marked by the prefix HMCS – Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship.
Canada now has a new Sovereign. His Majesty’s effigy or likeness will, over time, be included on a range of official documents and in services, ceremonies and activities that reflect the Crown in Canada.
Canada’s Royal Anthem, “God Save The Queen” has become “God Save The King” with the new Monarch.
In terms of the Privy Council Office (PCO) — the central federal office that supports the prime minister and cabinet — there will be many moving parts as they adjust oaths and other key documentation from the Queen’s Privy Council to the King’s Privy Council.
The Queen’s portraits will be replaced by new official portraits of the King. Until the time when the new portraits are available, the Queen’s portraits should be draped with black ribbon or fabric.
Queen Elizabeth’s face has been engraved on Canadian currency since her coronation in 1953. The Royal Canadian Mint says all coins engraved with the effigy of the Queen will remain legal tender and stay in circulation indefinitely. It notes that nickels bearing the likeness of her father, King George VI, are still legal tender today. The Mint has coin renditions with King Charles III ready for review but it will be up to the government of Canada to decide the timing of when to change the image on Canadian currency.
Queen Elizabeth’s passing will have some impact on more than a dozen other regiments, military branches and military organizations, for whom the Queen has been the titular head or patron. According to the Department of National Defence, These are to be reviewed and voted on and won’t be automatically changed to King Charles III.
Canadian law requires candidates who are 14 years or older to take the Oath of Citizenship on the day they become Canadian citizens. Part of the Oath reads: “I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors…” Now, candidates will have to swear allegiance to the new monarch, King Charles III.
As Canada mourns the death of their Queen, the transition to King Charles III will go as planned. In the future, questions will continue to arise about the importance of the monarchy and the country’s ties to the crown will continue to be reviewed and debated.
Let us put those thoughts to rest for now and remember the wondrous leader that Canada was proud to uphold for 70 years. Rest In Peace, Queen Elizabeth, we will always remember you.
